University of California, Riverside From the
Since UCR opened its doors to instruction 52 years ago, it has evolved into a mature research university the only one of its kind in Inland Southern California. We are a dynamic partner for the economic and cultural development of our region. We are an engaged university; this is reflected through the teaching activities of our faculty and the dynamic opportunities available to our students. Although the campus has grown to more than 17,000 students, our faculty remains accessible, a characteristic recognized year after year in student surveys. Students also benefit from our faculty's engagement in the creation of new knowledge, providing students with discovery-focused subject matter that inspires critical thinking and the meaningful exploration of new concepts. At UCR, students have the rare opportunity to live and learn in a vast living laboratory confronting the challenges of balancing biodiversity and sustainability of our agricultural and natural resources with economic growth and development of infrastructure. We encourage our freshmen to take intellectually stimulating Discovery Seminars to open their minds to new ideas. Many of our undergraduates participate in fellowships, internships, or hands-on research. Undergraduate and graduate students are empowered through representation on our Chancellor's Leadership Council and participation on various campus committees. Through student government, they advise the campus administration on curriculum, information technology, safety, scholarships and honors, and student fees, thus enhancing the student experience. We are particularly proud of our students who better the community with their participation in service activities. Students also can take part in more than 200 clubs and organizations, from joining a sorority or fraternity, to learning how to surf through Outdoor Excursions, to writing for The Highlander, the student newspaper. Through both academics and activities, UCR students can make a difference. UCR offers a window into the rest of the nation and the world. Our multicultural and diverse undergraduates are drawn from throughout the United States and the world, and nearly one-third of our graduate students are international. We encourage our students to participate in the Education Abroad Program to enhance their education with a global experience. This diversity broadens the discussion and exchange of ideas. As UCR continues to grow and evolve, we encourage our students to grow with us. This journey does not just last a few years; our students carry the UCR experience with them for years to come.
