The UCR Catalog on Kindle!

Here’s how to get started!

  1. Turn on your Kindle by sliding the power switch on bottom of the device.
  2. Press Home button to locate content stored on your Kindle.
  3. Find “The University of California, Riverside General Catalog, 2011-2012.” Press select… and you’re ready to use the catalog.



A few tips on navigation:

TURNING PAGES: To turn the page back or forward, simply press the buttons on the left hand side of the face of the Kindle. The upper button is the “Previous Page” button, the lower button is the “Next Page” button. (For easy access, there is also a “Next Page” button on the right side panel.)

HOME BUTTON: the Home Button shows content stored on your Kindle.

MENU BUTTON: display application and navigation choices that are related to the screen you are viewing.

5 –WAY CONTROLLER: Press down this controller to select an item or action. Moves the cursor (or on-screen highlight) up and down or left and right. (It is also used to navigate the Menu.)

KEYBOARD: use the keyboard to type in search items/terms, add notes, or type URLs for websites.

ACCESSING NUMBERS: Some people have a problem locating numbers on their keyboard. To do so, press the SYM (symbol) key to bring up the number/symbol keyboard.

Here’s how to get started!

  1. Turn on your iPad and look for the iBooks application box. You may have to search multiple pages to find it. To move between pages, slide your finger across the screen horizontally either left or right.
  2. Touch the iBooks application box with your finger to open the application.
  3. With the application now open, you will see either the “bookshelf” with a list of books available to choose from, or an open book/page if someone has already been reading e-books on your iPad. (If someone has been reading e-books or if you simply want to return to your bookshelf, just tap the “Library” button on the top left corner of the screen to go back.)
  4. On the bookshelf, tap the UCR Catalog 2011-2012 icon and the e-book will open. Now you’re ready to search and review and explore!



A few tips on navigation:

TURNING PAGES: To turn the page back or forward, you can put your finger on the either end and turn as if it were a real page, or you can simply tap each end. Another way to navigate through the catalog is to use the scroll bar found near the bottom of the page. This can be moved as desired. (Sometimes the scrollbar disappears. If it does, simply tap the top area of the e-book where the library button is located to make it reappear.)

TABLE OF CONTENTS: The button immediately to the right of the “Library” button will give you a Table of Contents with separated chapters for easy access to each chapter or academic program.

SEARCHING: To search the e-book catalog, tap on the magnifying glass to open up the search box and keyboard. Type a keyword or two into the box to search the entire e-book.

BOOKMARKS: Immediately to the right of the magnifying glass is a bookmark. You can use this to bookmark a page for future reference.

FONT SIZE: Immediately to the left of the magnifying glass is the button to change font size. The button to change light settings is to the left of the font button.

TEXT: To select text, double tap on the desired text and move until you’ve chosen what you desire. A menu will pop up that will give you the option to Copy the text, open a Dictionary to look up the word, Highlight word(s), make a Note regarding the word(s), or to Search for the word(s) throughout the rest of the book.
